Ceilings, including popcorn removal

A ceiling has two jobs: cover the room, and manage what you hear through it. Grid and tile where the valves above have to stay reachable, solid assemblies where the room below needs quiet, and popcorn taken off where a ceiling just needs to be flat.

Ceilings, including popcorn removal

What it involves

Often for

  • Popcorn ceilings
  • Cracked or sagging ceilings
  • Rooms under a busy floor
  • A sample tested before any old texture is scraped
  • Popcorn and sprayed textures taken off
  • Skim-coated flat and primed for paint
  • Resilient channel and denser board where quiet matters
  • Doorways sealed and floors covered before sanding

Step by step

How it goes

  1. Walk the job

Measure, check the framing, and agree the finish level for each room.

  2. Hang

Board fixed to the framing with the joints kept clear of doors and windows.

  3. Tape and coat

Joints taped and coated, each coat left to dry before the next.

  4. Sand and prime

Sanded smooth, primed, and ready for paint — or painted, if that is on the quote.

Inside the wall

Built layer by layer

Drag it to turn it. Choose a layer to see the wall as it stands at that step.

Primed and painted by the same crew, so the finish shows no seam.

The details

Done properly

  • Popcorn off, flat ceiling back

The texture is wetted and scraped, the ceiling skim-coated flat and primed ready for paint.

  • Quieter floors above

Resilient channel and denser board where the room below needs to hear less of the room above.

  • Dust kept in the room

Doorways sealed and floors covered before any sanding starts overhead.

Questions people ask

Is my popcorn ceiling safe to scrape?

Ceilings from before the mid-1980s can contain asbestos. A sample is tested before any scraping; if it is positive, the work goes to a licensed abatement contractor first.

Can a textured ceiling be matched after a repair?

Yes. Knockdown, orange peel and most sprayed textures can be matched so the repair does not show.

Tell us about the job

The more you can say about the room, the ceiling height and the state of what is there now, the sharper the first answer will be. Most questions are settled in one call.
