Everything after it inherits the hanging. Board cut and fixed to framing with the joints kept clear of doors and windows, where movement concentrates. A joint in the wrong place is a crack no amount of taping will hold.

Patches show for two reasons: filled over something soft, or the texture around them never matched. Damage gets cut back to sound board before anything is filled, then finished, textured to what is on the wall, and painted through.

A ceiling has two jobs: cover the room, and manage what you hear through it. Grid and tile where the valves above have to stay reachable, solid assemblies where the room below needs quiet, and popcorn taken off where a ceiling just needs to be flat.

Water leaves after the leak is fixed and the damage stays. Stained board comes out rather than being painted over, the framing behind it is checked while the wall is open, and the ceiling or wall is put back and matched to what is around it.

A curve is cut, kerfed and taped by hand, and it either reads as a smooth line or it does not. There is no texture that hides a bad arch — the light travels along it and finds every flat spot.

A basement or a garage is usually the coldest, dampest room in the house, and it shows in the board long before it shows anywhere else. The right board goes where the damp is, the framing gets checked before anything covers it, and the room comes out flat enough to paint.

Steel stud framing, hung and finished to a schedule other trades are working to. Offices, units and tenant fit-outs, where the deadline is somebody else's and the walls are not allowed to be the reason it slips.

A texture match works when you cannot find it afterwards. That means reading the pattern already there — its size, its spacing, how hard it was flattened — and reproducing it, rather than spraying something close and hoping the paint pulls it together.
