Three decades in the same trade, in the same towns. Long enough to know which of the housing stock around here moves, where the cracks turn up when it does, and what a wall needs before it ever sees a roller.

Stephen does the taping, the finishing, the patching, the painting and the estimating himself. Hanging is the one part he does not do — he has someone for that — which means the board goes up for the finish rather than the finish being fitted to the board.

Adding paint was not about doing more. It was about controlling the last step. A wall is judged on the coat you can see, and the coat you can see is only as good as the three under it — so the same person should own both.

The trade is straightforward and the standard is not: flat walls, clean corners, and a finish that holds up under the light it will live under. Every job is measured the same way — is the surface flat, is the corner true, and will the joint still be invisible in a year.
